Culinary Coaching 1

PRACTICUM

This will be the last activity for your module in Culinary Coaching 1. We are hoping that you were able to grasp the idea of integrating counseling with patients/clients who are having issues with eating behavior resulting in chronic disease development. We have provided here the form you can use as you assess your participants in the activity that you will organize. Yes, you are tasked to organize a small group visit with a minimum of 4 participants with an established diagnosis of either hypertension, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, obesity, arthritis, or depression. You may choose to organize a homogenous group (composed of participants with the same health conditions) or a heterogenous group (composed of patients with different health conditions). We highly suggest that you retain the participants that you have worked with in the task you had in Unit 2 and for the rest of the coming tasks for data consistency.

The session may run in a minimum of 2 hours that should be started with orientation of what the activity is all about and description of the group visit mechanics:
  • Introduction of participants with brief overview as to why they joined the session.
  • Reading of your objectives (we hope to see your objectives aligned with the goals in the module)
  • Distribution of the form that you have previously collected (Forms should be given and filled up prior to the session).
  • Short Lecture Discussion (you may choose to summarize the learning you got from this module and discuss it with your clients/patients).  Providing a reading material would be very helpful to sustain attentiveness and interaction among participants.
  • Allow each patient to give a brief reflection on their goal in specific behavior change using the SMART goal pattern.  Your role is to support and affirm positive level of confidence and assist redirection of negative perspective and establish motivation.
  • End the session by congratulating participants for a successful workshop and encourage them to adhere with their behavior change.
  • Invite the participants for the next coming session that will already include hands on food preparation.
  • You may choose to follow them up through any form of communication to motivate them further.

One of the most important aspect of conducting an activity is documentation.  You will have to document the session by taking videos or photos of your group activities.  Then, organize them for submission including the forms filled up by your participants and your reflective summary.
